Supporting someone through a hard time

You do not have to solve everything in one conversation. Focus on immediate safety, listen without judgement and help connect the person with appropriate support.

Be direct and compassionate. Ask how they are really feeling and whether they are thinking about hurting themselves.

Give them your attention, take their feelings seriously and avoid rushing to fix or dismiss what they are experiencing.

Support

Help them connect with professional support, involve trusted people and call emergency services if there is immediate danger.

Look after yourself too.Share responsibility with other trusted people, maintain boundaries and seek your own support when you need it.
