Short Term Respite (STR) — formerly Short Term Accommodation (STA)
A supported break away from home for you, and a well-earned rest for your family or carers. STR is typically funded for up to 14 days at a time, up to 28 days a year, in a safe, welcoming environment.
What is Short Term Respite?
Short Term Respite (STR) — formerly known as Short Term Accommodation (STA) — is a temporary, NDIS-funded support that lets you stay away from your usual home while your family or informal carers take a break. In October 2025 the NDIA renamed STA to STR, sharpening the focus on giving your primary informal supports meaningful time apart from day-to-day caring duties, while you enjoy a safe, supported stay, try new activities, and build everyday skills.

Looking to build independence and daily living skills in a supportive setting?

Who Qualifies, and What Evidence You Need
Adults
You'll generally need to live with, or receive regular drop-in support from, your primary informal supports (family or friends) — typically for six or more hours a day — so STR can give you both a genuine break.
Children Under 18
STR is available in exceptional circumstances only, such as risk of out-of-home care placement or a lack of other in-home support for the family.
Evidence We'll Help You Gather
The NDIA looks for evidence of your disability support needs — assessments, reports, or information from your providers and allied health professionals — showing when and how often support is needed.
NDIS Funding & Pricing from 1 July 2026
STR is funded under the NDIS Core Supports budget. From 1 July 2026, the NDIA is unbundling STR pricing: support hours and accommodation are billed as separate line items instead of one combined daily rate, with the accommodation contribution capped at $162.85 a day. Funding covers standard accommodation and support only — not holidays, cruises, or overseas trips. Our team can help you understand what this means for your plan, determine your eligibility, and coordinate arrangements for your stay.
- Personalised planning for your needs
- Support with NDIS processes
- Guidance for participants and carers

Success Stories
What STR with INREACH Supports Could Look Like
Emma's story is an example of what a Short Term Respite (STR) stay with INREACH Supports might be like.
Emma wanted a break from her usual routine. During her stay, she got involved in fun activities, made new friends, and felt more confident doing everyday things on her own. Her carers were happy too — knowing she was in a safe, supportive place where she could enjoy herself and build new skills.
STR is designed to give both participants and their families a chance to rest, recharge, and grow.
